The Light Of Distance

The LED screen glowed with a cold blue light to illuminate both his face, and the wall behind him. On the screen were three simple and seemingly harmless words that he felt needed to be spoken. The cursor blinked expectantly. With each flash it seemed to switch between pleading and mocking. The screen mercifully went dark as the internal clock ticked the time required before shutting off to save power.

"Nah, she would probably just get mad."

The words were spoken out to nobody in particular and the phone screen blazed back to life. Lock screen showed 12:47 and subsequently disappeared after he swiped across the screen. Still sitting unsent on his screen sat the three simple but intensely powerful words.

"I love you."

He grimaced and deleted the text, watching as the cursor happily devoured the words hungrily. Finally moving and not stuck on the whims of an indecisive love sick fool. Heaving a sigh he placed the phone face down and rolled over in an attempt to capture that ever elusive mistress that is sleep.

As his eyes lay shut, the edges of dreams infiltrating reality, the phone chirped out loudly.
